The Future Unfolds
An immersive and interactive journey to explore the future of mobility
Dedicated to sustainable mobility and the ecological and digital transition, The Future Unfolds is an exhibition conceived by the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin as an ever-evolving environment shaped by the ongoing interaction with its visitors. The project we designed combines physical and digital installations to create an immersive and participatory journey, where each visitor's choice contributes to generating personalized and dynamic content. An experience that weaves together design, technology, and collective responsibility, turning the museum into a living lab of imagination and future thinking.

The Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile – MAUTO is one of the world’s oldest and most important automobile museums. With a collection of over 200 original vehicles from 80 different brands, the museum tells the story of the invention that changed the world. It serves as a key hub for innovation and reflection on the future of mobility. MAUTO invited us to develop the layout, installations, and multimedia content for The Future Unfolds — a dynamic and interactive extension of the permanent exhibition, supported by a public outreach program focused on innovation and sustainable mobility. This section is part of the broader Future Mobility initiative — a long-term project that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of an exhibition, designed to inform, inspire, and actively engage the public. In particular, we translated the scientific content developed by Fondazione LINKS and the Herbert Simon Society — curators of the research component — into spatial and multimedia experiences.
Leftloft’s approach to Spazio Futuro is rooted in a human-centered methodology, beginning with a core question: How can we create an experience that helps people understand and influence the transformations shaping the future of mobility? From this question, we developed a collaborative design process with scientific partners, ensuring clarity of content while building a spatial and visual narrative capable of engaging a wide and diverse audience. Our design focused on accessibility, emotional resonance, and interactivity, transforming the exhibition from a space of passive observation to one of active engagement. The result is an immersive environment where design becomes a tool for awareness, dialogue, and shared imagination. Installations do not simply convey knowledge — they collect meaningful data from visitor interactions, making the exhibition a living system capable of evolving. At the heart of the project is Spazio Futuro, a newly designed section that places people at the center. Visitors are invited to actively explore the major shifts influencing mobility's future. Immersive storytelling, interactive technologies, and personalized content encourage reflection on the impact of daily choices and nurture a collective sense of responsibility. The journey unfolds across four thematic areas, each featuring custom installations that spotlight specific themes and gather data to ensure the exhibition remains in constant evolution.
Observe, Walk, Explore, and Navigate are the four thematic areas that guide visitors through an immersive journey of technologies, future scenarios, prototypes, and interactive installations. Thanks to NFC-enabled cards, visitors’ responses are tracked throughout the journey, making the experience highly personalized and dynamic. Observe Introduces visitors to how humanity has imagined the future through art, literature, and cinema. These cultural visions have often laid the groundwork for innovation. The installation highlights key historical milestones and recent developments that have contributed to safer, more sustainable transportation systems. Walk Invites visitors to reflect on their mobility habits. By answering a series of questions, they contribute to building a collective knowledge base. Each response is stored on their NFC card, shaping a tailored experience later in the exhibition. Explore Showcases ongoing scientific research, emerging technologies, behavioral trends, and new policies in the field of mobility. Visitors can interact with data, watch videos, and explore physical prototypes. An interactive installation suggests the “car of the future” best suited to their preferences and needs. Navigate Functions as a compass, presenting visitors with future mobility scenarios generated through AI. Using the data collected via NFC, each person receives a personalized scenario aligned with their answers, encouraging deeper reflection and action.
